Breaking the Geek Glass Ceiling

Reasons to read:

Published earlier this year, Emily Chang’s Brotopia is another great case for the push and the value of diversity. Chang takes us through the history of Silicon Valley’s tech culture, where the hiring of “anti-social” white men is justified by "scientific" reports that identify them as best prospects for programing. As a result, it institutionalized this toxic, misogynistic environment.

Marketers will see Silicon Valley is no different than Madison Avenue. When it comes to women or people of color, their numbers are few in leadership positions. Yet, Brotopia features examples of inclusivity improving profit margins, creativity, and critical thinking.

Listening to words of wisdom is just the smart thing to do. It’s downright biblical: Planning ahead will protect you, and understanding will guard you. These will keep you from following the wrong path and will protect you from those who have evil plans. (Proverbs 2: 11-12)

Chang imparts true wisdom to people on the tech path (and even marketing, as both fields continue to blend). Brotopia is about battles fought, pitfalls to avoid, and strides forward.

When you know other paths taken, it helps you better plan your own.
